Neuro- Discipline by Peter Hollins
Tricking one's own Brain is a
science, and if one is capable of continuously doing this to gain control on
discipline, then there is no stopping them from achieving their goal, irrespective
of the field.
“Neuro -Discipline” by Peter Hollins
is an insightful book to read to understand the art of conquering one own’s
Brain- what they call as “Tricking one own’s Brain”. The Author refers to this
as a Neuro science that can be applied by any common person and they don’t need
to be a genius to understand the key aspects to this. This more than a self-
help book. It is almost a revelation to the reader who is not accustomed to
these concepts.
The book is a simple read with neuro-
scientific concepts explained in layman’s language with some good on the ground
examples. The book is divided into five parts and a summary of all section at
the end of the book.
The first part – The Neuroscience
of Self discipline is an insightful ride into the aspects about the human brain
that directly impacts human self- discipline and focus. The interesting section
in this part describes the reader about the tale of two brains inside our head
-the cerebral cortex and Limbic system. Readers will enjoy the explanation as
how these two parts impact almost all our events and actions all through the day.
The second and third part of the
book concentrates on the techniques of tricking the brain. This is fun. Readers
will be enlightened to read about the various techniques with which they can
play with their own Brain and trick the brain to perform and be focused. These
techniques are helpful for every age and would the application will benefit in
multiple forms.
This portion has some incredible
mind concepts that can help one avoiding self-destructive habits. One of them
being imagining oneself in a future time (time travel with one’s mind) with the
current habits and acts. How would one feel some weeks later or perhaps months
later as a result of the current decision or habit or act.
The next interesting concept
that one would come across in this section is the practice of breaking up of
monumental tasks and goals into smaller and tiny ones and upon the completion
or achievement of these tiny goals feel proud and motivated.
The third part of the book concentrates
on the topic of Mind shift that one needs to adopt to if they want their brains
to functions with utmost productivity. This section mentions methods and
techniques with which one can practice positive mind shift that would be
incidental in practicing the concept of tricking one’s brain for self-discipline
The last section – Creating space
and calm- relates to the concepts of practicing delaying gratification, keeping
a calm and composed mind and the importance of being in discomfort zone to achieve
one’s goal and dreams.
The book is a quick read with
some 140 pages of insightfulness. Readers of the book will have to consume the
concepts and perhaps make a noting of important pointers that they can apply to
practice tricking the brain. Tricking one’s brain from being away from pleasure
that can make us lazy and in comfort zone is an important act in the current times
when the world is full of distractions and focus is almost like an ancient treasure
that every want but no one wants to practice it.
The book has quite a bit
references to studies and researches that has been conducted in globally
renowned universities and institutes. The outcome of these studies is interesting
to note considering the overall impact it contributes to the concepts in the
book.
