The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle : Book Review
It is generally presumed that
“talent” is inborn and specific to certain categories of people. “The Talent
Code” by Daniel Coyle, first published in the year 2009, puts that presumption
to rest and showcases as to how talent is specifically not inborn but developed
over a period of time to anyone who follows the process.
The book is an eye opener for
the people who consider talent to only specific set of people. For these
readers, the reading experience will showcase that talent can be developed by a
person through a systematic and scientific process and understanding the
contribution of the human brain and its neural circuits in nurturing and
developing a specific talent or skill.
The introduction chapter in the
book is an excellent opening devised by the author showcasing by real world
practical examples from all over the globe as to the formation of “talent
hotbeds” (specific cities, towns, district or even a family) after the initial
boom of a single talent from that region or family. The author refers to the
uniqueness of these places as the talent boom takes place without any warning
or any show-off. The author showcases various examples from different field to
prove his point on the concept of talent hotbeds.
In the same introduction
section, the readers will come across a rather intriguing description of a real-
life example with a girl named, Clarissa (name changed in the book) whose
progress in developing her talent in music and singing is documented by two
psychologists for understanding how an average person who doesn’t seem to be
talented, develops her talent with reasonable pace through sheer practice. The important lesson that is to be drawn
through this introductory section is that practice will not make someone
talented in one day, but regular practice by following key elements of the
practice process taking into consideration the neurological mechanism in which
certain patterns of targeted practice build skill will contribute to the speed
at the which the improvement takes place after each practice session and make
an important contribution to the overall progress. The author refers to this
entire process as the talent code.
The understanding of the
scientific and biological link to the development of talent and skill is
showcased further in the section where in the reader will come across the
concept of a neural insulator in the human brain called “myelin” that is
considered to be a key contributor in acquiring skill. The further explanation
to the concept of “myelin” in this section is scientific in nature but will be
equally interesting to the readers.
The book is divided into three
parts namely; Deep Practice, ignition and master coaching. The author informs
that each section is useful in its own form but the utilization of the three
sections in aggregation is the key contributing factor for acquiring and
developing skill. There is another finale section in the book that describes
more about the concept of “myelin”.
The first section of the book- “Deep
Practice”- will put some underlying presumptions about the act of practice
and the impact of practice to question. The key point that the author tries to
put across in this section is that mere practice is not enough but the method
and what ones does in those practice sessions are more critical. Here the
reader will come across the differentiating factors in between normal practice
and deep practice.
The concept of deep practice as
envisioned in this book is practicing at the most uncomfortable point of one’s
ability, learning from mistakes, and keep repeating the process to bring out
the impact of the learning curve. Readers will understand the importance of
“repeating the practice session” as it has the direct impact on the myelin
component in the brain that helps in the building and refinement of the
circuits in the brain and also about the importance of making mistakes to learn
from those mistakes by making a correction and this correction remains intact
in the neural circuits of the brain.
In this section the author brings
in an example of Brazil as a talent hotbed for bringing out soccer talent on a
continuous basis. This part of the section is very interesting to read for understanding
the overall system of deep practice that the Brazilian players undergo from a
young age.
One of the key portions of this
section is the understanding of the three rules of deep practice namely;
- Rule 1- Chunk it -Breaking down complicated skills into smaller pieces.
- Rule 2- Slow it down – slow down the speed at which one learns to have a control on the learning process.
- Rule 3- Feel the skill – developing an internal understanding of the correctness of the skill or activity performed.
The author has showcased certain
activity examples to differentiate between normal practice and deep practice that
will give a real -world example of the differentiation for the readers.
The second section of the book
concentrates on “Ignition” – the factor contributing to the willingness
of an individual to go the extra mile
and perform deep practice and maintain that practice. Readers will get an
understanding as to the reasons for variance in performance and practice
outcome or even the practice sessions performed in spite of all qualities and
resources available. Here in the key reason mentioned is the motivation that
fuels the necessity of deep practice. How external environment influences
motivation has been documented well this section.
The author uses two specific
examples in this section. The first one – Roger Bannister case that showcases
the impact on deep practice of internal feeling that the destination is
attainable and the second one -The Curacao example – where in the author
showcases the reasons as to why and how did Curacao – a small island, produce
some of the most successful baseball players and how did they develop a strong baseball
culture. These examples showcase as to
the importance of motivation that ultimately induces deep practice and leads to
creation of talent hotbeds.
The third section of the book
concentrates on “master coaching” – where in the author tries to
showcase the difference between a routine coach and a master coach. The key aspect covered in this is the fact
that master coaches go beyond the routine conventional type of coaching and
concentrates more on observing, identification of changes, communicating key
aspects at the correct stage of development or learning. This section
specifically identifies four key virtues of a master coach:
- The Matrix-the network of knowledge ranging from technical, psychological, historical and emotional.
- Perceptiveness-ability to see and observe correctly what is the current situation
- The GPS reflex- communicating like GPS communication device as per the observation made on the activity.
- Theatrical Honesty- showcasing what needs to performed, improved upon, changes by practically performing and communicating without holding back.
There is a separate portion in
this section that is dedicated to Football coach -Tom Martinez where in the
author tries to showcase through the real -life example as to importance of
master coaches to possess the key characteristic to detect and evaluate
capacity and ability that are not visible on the surface. Readers will get a
good understanding about master coaching in this example.
Reading all the three sections
of the book one after another and connecting all three will provide the reader
with key understanding about the elements that go into acquiring and developing
a skill and the methods of maintaining the skill in the neural circuits of the
brain.
The book is easy to read with a
good amount of real -life examples set in the different sections and chapters
of the books. These examples provide a good interconnecting understanding with
the concepts mentioned in the chapters.
It is recommended to read the
book as a whole, line by line, paragraph by paragraph to gain the productive impact
that it can have on the reader. Only when the reader connects the first chapter
with the third chapter, the positive learning will accumulate to one’s personal
experience in learning or acquiring a new skill. Reading summaries and bullet
points may not give the relevant understanding to the reader.
The book is suitable for all
ages and everyone who wants to learn the art of acquiring new skill. However,
making notes on the learning will help one to take action on the personal
front.
The book is highly recommended
to readers and will surely motivate to improve the process of acquiring new
learnings and skill in their own personal lives.
